For those who, like yours truly, are already eagerly looking forward to the next edition of Europalia, putting Brazil in the spotlight this autumn, 'Oi! A Nova Musica Brasileira!' might well offer the ideal warm-up. In forty songs this compilation takes you on a trip through multiple genres (rock, dub, electro, but also lesser-known ones like manguebeat, tecnobrega, carimbo or punk-forró) and names of which you probably never heard before (and we neither to be honest). Which songs on this compilation will tickle your fancy is hard to predict, but we were quite taken by DJ Tudo & Gente De Todo Lugar's mix of perre and dub ('Gaita Maestra'), with the psychedelic funky afrobeat of Burro Morto ('Navalha Cega') or the surf-merengue of La Pupuña (which, as far as we are concerned, would fit the next Quentin Tarantino soundtrack perfectly) sounding just as mesmerizing. The liner notes of the album were conceived as a map of Brazil showing you where the different artists on 'Oi! A Nova Musica Brasileira!' come from. Enjoy your musical expedition!
