'They Will Have To Kill Us First' is the soundtrack to the 2015 documentary of the same name by Johanna Schwartz about the impact the raids by the jihadist fundamentalists of Ansar Dine and Al-Qaeda had on the musical life in Mali. The soundtrack was produced by Nick Zinner, guitarist with American indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but also producer of 'Music In Exile', the acclaimed debut by Songhoy Blues. In the track list famous names like Ali Farka Touré, Afel Bocoum, Toumani Diabate, Bombino Khaira Arby, and of course the aforementioned Songhoy Blues, but also a few names yours truly did not immediately recognize (Amkoullel, Carmen Kouyaté, Moussa Sidi, Fadimata 'Disco' Wallet Oumar). If you're in any way interested in Malian music, 'They Will Have To Kill Us First' is definitely for you. And then you haven't even seen the accompanying documentary!
