The first thing one notices about this 'Ananas' (dutch for "pineapple") EP by Zebras Are Timeless, is the original cover photo, for which the heads of the various band members were expertly photoshopped into the shape of a pineapple, and the disc itself looking like a slice of pineapple. The eponymous title track hovers somewhere between Talking Heads and Trafassi, but suffers somewhat because of its all too simplistic lyrics. The rest of the tracks on the EP could convince us though. Opener 'Why' is playful rocksteady, 'Another One' breathes the spirit of great 2 Tone ska bands like The Specials or The Selecter and also reminded yours truly of some of Joe Jackson's earlier work, for 'Sambuca' the Zebras go Latin, and thanks to the use of a ukulele acoustic closing track 'Traffic' gets a touch of Hawaiian charm. Nice soundtrack to go with the first spring sunshine!
