For 'Fly Rasta' Ziggy Marley is reunited with The Melody Makers (his two sisters Sharon and Cedella and Erica Newell) giving the album the vibe of his older work. For some of the songs on the album, Ziggy flirts with rock ('I Don't Wanna Live On Mars', 'You') and tracks like 'Lighthouse' or 'So Many Rising' can be classified as the better singer-songwriter pop. Title track 'Fly Rasta', which Ziggy claims to have been holding onto for close to 20 years, thanks to the presence of DJ veteran U Roy, is the catchiest tune in the track list. Lyrically, most notably are opener 'I Don't Wanna Live On Mars', in which Ziggy, referring to the recent recruitment campaign for a manned mission to Mars, expresses his love for planet Earth, and 'You're My Yoko', a nod to John Lennon but above all a declaration of love to his wife Orly. The fact Ziggy is concerned with the welfare of our planet is also illustrated by each copy of 'Fly Rasta' coming with a packet of wildflower seeds, encouraging his fans to beautify the planet, a flowerbed at the time; and the fact he works with organizations like COTAP (Carbon Offsets To Alleviate Poverty), assisting him in reducing the carbon footprint of his world tour.
