Mike Brooks is one of those unrightfully forgotten roots voices from the 1970s. As a producer, he was responsible for 'Country Living' the first hit for legendary trio The Mighty Diamonds. The Trojan label recently released 'Living My Culture', a double album that offers a nice overview of the man's career, and on his own label EB Records there's this 'Rise Up'. Brooks has been living in London, the cradle of lovers rock, for several years now, and that is clearly audible: Mikey is a lover man. The predominantly digital instrumentation sounds a bit bare at times, but Brooks' beautiful voice (which was at one time compared to that of the legendary soul god Curtis Mayfield) makes you forget about that shortcoming easily.
