The Franco-Lebanese trumpet player Ibrahim Maalouf doesn't like labels, but the ingredients of his music are unmistakable. His latest opus 'Diachronism' is split up into two parts: 'Disoriental', with a more Arab timbre, will appeal to world music enthusiasts, while 'Paradoxidental', with influences from jazz, funk and hip-hop music, sounds more modern and Western. Live Ibrahim Maalouf is highly recommended (his music has moments of breathtaking beauty and the man himself is disarmingly funny and sincere) but 'Diachronism' sounds a tad too fragmentary to have the same effect. For experimental souls.
