"Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours." (Genesis 37: 3)

Seeing the cover of 'Riots In The Jungle', yours truly spontaneously thought of this Bible fragment and it also perfectly describes Skip & Die's eccentric front woman Catarina Aimée Dahms aka Cata-Pirata. Pirata was born in South Africa, but followed her parents around globe, bringing her to the Azores, Ibiza and later to Argentina and the United Kingdom. Cata currently resides in Amsterdam where she bumped into musician and producer Jori Collignon. The duo travelled to South Africa and that trip is at the heart of this album debut. For 'Riots In The Jungle' the duo collaborated worked with several local South-African artists (Gazelle, Driemanskap, Season Marimba Stars), resulting in a sound that isn't easily describable, but with a mix of tropical vibes, hip-hop, dubstep and electronica that is somewhat reminiscent of the equally surprising hip-hop universe in which Pirata's countrymen Die Antwoord and Jack Parow feel best at ease. That being said, because of its influences from Africa, Asia and South America, Skip & Die's music is much more eclectic. And where can you still a singer who can switch back and forth between Portuguese, English and Spanish without breaking a sweat? Intercontinental patchwork!
