With this compilation by notorious German music collector Dr. Bertram Nickolay, the Piranha label would like to draw attention to the symbiosis between Arab and Jewish musicians as it has existed for centuries in a lot of areas around the Mediterranean Sea. The subtitle of this compilation is 'A West-Eastern Divan', referring to the form of government that existed during the Ottoman Empire, when the various sultanates were governed by Grand Viziers at the behest of the Turkish sultan. Turkish Sephardic chants, North African chaabi or Oriental dance music from Lebanon, all these genres are related and names like Watcha Clan, Ruth Yaakov, Maurice El Médioni, Mahmoud Fadl and The Klezmatics should ring a bell with lovers of this kind of music. Intriguing compilation proving we're all not as different as some political or religious voices would have us believe. On the inside of the album cover an excerpt from a song by The Klezmatics summarizes it all perfectly: "I ain't afraid of your Yahweh. I ain't afraid of your Allah. I ain't afraid of your Jesus. I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God!"
