Yasus Afari rose to fame as the poet who extended the boundaries of dub poetry by incorporating dancehall. 'Ancient Future' still contains a few dancehall riddims ('Who Put The Pressure', a great combination with colleague dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah), but Afari moves with the times so the track list even contains a number of dubstep tracks (opener 'Wa Gwaan', 'The Wish'). 'Light Your Light', a combination with Toots Hibbert, is an ode to ganja over a particularly fresh sounding riddim. 'Rise Up (New Zealand)' is an interesting song focusing on the rights of the indigenous Maori population of New Zealand for which Yasus gets the company of Samoan hip-hopper King Kapisi. For amateurs of classic riddims there's 'Isus Reborn' on the Satta riddim. With 'Ancient Future' Yasus Afari wanted to couple the best of the past with the newest trends for the future: dub poetry for the 21st century!
