Where Yemeni music is concerned, our knowledge was limited to the repertoire of the prematurely departed Ofra Haza (who doesn't remember 'Im Nin'alu' ?), but with A-WA or the three Haim sisters, who you may already consider our hot tip in world music for 2016, that is now about to change. Tair, Liron and Tagel grew up in Shaharut, a village in the far south of Israel, a few dozen kilometers from Eilat. For their music from they draw on their Judeo-Yemeni background, supplemented with influences from dub/reggae, electro and hip-hop. The trio's career caught momentum after they decided to contact Balkan Beat Box's Tomer Yosef. Yosef could barely believe his ears and promptly bombarded the ladies as Balkan Beat Box's regular opening act. In the production of 'Habib Galbi', A-WA's long player debut, Tomer played an active role as well. Title song 'Habib Galbi', which clip is definitely worth checking out, definitely stands out from the other songs in the track list, but the other 11 tracks sound almost just as enticing and whisk away the listener to the polyphonic and colorful universe of the three sisters, who effortlessly manage to blend tradition with innovation.
