A group of Breton musicians throwing themselves on Ethiopian music from the nineteen sixties and seventies with a passion… admittedly, it's not the most obvious of combinations. On their debut album, 'Addis Kan' (the title is a pun on words where 'Addis Kan' represents the kan or King of Addis, but the kan ha diskan, which translated from Breton means something like "question and answer", is also the most popular form of traditional Breton music) Badume's Band gives its interpretation of old hits by Ethiopian artists like Getachew Debalqe, Tesfaye Lemma or Mahmoud Ahmed (who even puts in an appearance in person on 'Fetsum Denq Ledj Nesh'). No idea if the Amharic of front man Eric Menneteau is good enough to convince an Ethiopian audience, but judging from their performance at the Addis Ababa Festival in 2007 there is little doubt about that. The confidence they got from artists like Alemayehu Eshete and Mahmoud Ahmed, for whom Badume's Band acted as backing band during European tours, speaks volumes. Ethiopian music finally seems ready to conquer the world!
