The fact Augustus Pablo wasn't the only one playing the melodica in Kingston is proven by Bobby Kalphat's 'Zion Hill'. Kalphat, best known for his work as a keyboardist, learned to know and appreciate the instrument when he went to live in the Jamaican countryside for a while where he had to make do without electricity. A limited edition of 'Zion Hill' originally appeared in 1977 on Bobby's own Terminal label and is now reissued for the first time. Title track 'Zion Hill' is a delicious melodica version of The Heptones' 'Party Time' and 'Strange Mood (Upstairs At 118 Orange Street)' is also a version of a well-known classic, this time John Holt's 'Strange Things'. The album contains more such gems: how about 'Terminal Rock', a melodica adaptation of Dennis Brown's 'What About The Half' or 'Garla-Azar', a nod in the direction of master Augustus Pablo himself, because actually a version of his 'Dub Organizer'? As usual with these kind of reissues, the Pressure Sounds label added a few bonus tracks to the original track list and from those we'd like to highlight 'Raw Roots', an update of the Ken Boothe classic 'Artibella'. Rare and enjoyable melodica gem!
