Ceumar Coelho is a singer-songwriter from Itanhandu, a small town in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, who relocated to The Netherlands. Even though she now resides in Amsterdam, for the recording of this album Ceumar still returned to São Paolo. For 'Silencia' ("silence") Ceumar collaborated with French cellist Vincent Ségal (a name already familiar to us from his collaborations with Ballaké Sissoko and Salif Keita) and apart from her own acoustic guitar and Webster Santos' mandolin and cavaquinho, it's his instrument that plays the leading role in many of the songs on the album. Ceumar comments: "The idea of 'Silencia' was to create a way to reveal the silences hidden in the sounds of my songs...". This approach results in an album that situates itself somewhere between Brazilian bossa nova, classical music and Portuguese fado, and live will undoubtedly do well in the appropriate intimate setting.
