The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is bound to evoke some associations (banking, cheap refuelling, etc.), but timba, the Cuban answer to Nuyorican salsa, will probably not be among them. Yet it is the home of renowned conga player Eric 'Choco' Durrer, who, with Choco Y Sus Complices, is starting a new chapter in his musical career. The nickname Choco retained Durrer from his previous project: Eric Y Su Chocolate. For this project Eric put together an eighteen-piece band based on the line-up of traditional Cuban charanga orchestras - violin, cello and flute - supplemented with a number of excellent vocalists (Alberto Caicedo, Tomas Sotolongo Fuentes, Yumarya Grijt, Daniel Lopez Montejo, Lodewijk van Gorp and Durrer himself), a four-piece horn section, quite a few percussionists and a drummer. In the tracklist10 self-penned compositions and a striking and successful timba reworking of George Michael's 'Freedom! '90'. Eric considers his two daughters to be his musical muses, and, dressed as a little angel and devil, Nahima and Maya got a prominent place on the cover of 'Buscando La Calma'. Enough explaining, time to shake your legs to this excellent European Latin release!
