Yet another Dennis Brown compilation? Not quite, because with 'Reggae Anthology: The Crown Prince Of Reggae, Singles 1972 - 1985', VP Records tries to give a comprehensive overview of the career of the Crown Prince of reggae. As the proverbial icing on the cake you get a DVD containing the registration of the concert Dennis Brown (then accompanied by the fantastic We The People Band led by Lloyd Parks) gave at the Montreux Jazz festival in 1979. Of course a number of Dennis' most famous hits can also be found on this anthology ('Promised Land', 'No More Will I Roam', 'Ghetto Girl'...), but since forty songs were collected to fill the two discs this compilation counts, a few rare gems are also among them (check out 'Rebel With A Cause' with Jackie Mittoo on vocoder or the downright fantastic 'Love has Found It's Way', a song that could rival the best Philly soul tunes without any problem). VP Records apparently found it necessary to mention that: "The sound quality of the CD is below today's Digital Standards..."; on some songs indeed some noise and crackles are audible, but does that really matter when you hear the voice of D. Brown? Respect due!
