Diaspora (a reference to the fact slavery resulted in a worldwide spread of African culture) is a collaborative project by Londoner with Italian roots Luca Gatti aka Dr. Cat, French musician/composer Stephane René and Egyptian Baheeg Ramzy Mikhail, known as the master of the maqam. On 'A Jamaican In Cairo' the trio explores the African roots of reggae and similarities between the Caribbean genre and North African genres like raï, chaabi or gnawa. As revolutionary-philosophical as the liner notes would have us believe it never becomes, but the threesome did manage to persuade a number of nice guests to lend a hand (Amina Annabi, Bob Andy, Zion Train) and that results in a more than enjoyable album.
