Echoes Of Zoo is the new project around saxophonist Nathan Daems (Black Flower, Ragini Trio, Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra, Nathan Daems Quintet...), for the occasion flanked by jazz guitarist Bart Vervaeck (Nathan Daems Quintet, Compro Oro, The Tubs, Paola Marquez...), bassist Lieven Van Pée (Moker, John Ghost, Bardot...) and drummer Falk Schrauwen (Wolf in the Wood, Sysmo, Sylvie Kreusch...). For the sound of Echoes Of Zoo, in which he combines psychedelic jazz with a punk attitude, Arab rock and West African drum patterns, Daems drew inspiration from the work of Rage Against The Machine, one of his favorite bands as a youth. The four songs on this appropriately titled 'First Provocations' EP may be purely instrumental in nature, but with titles like 'Gorilla Guerilla', 'Killer Whale Show' or 'Cricket Sabotage', Daems states he wants to stand up for those who don't get a voice in today's society. Echoes Of Zoo certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea, but at least sounds intriguing enough to keep one listening. Skillful work, as we have come to expect from Daems and his associates. Will undoubtedly be continued!
