With 'Battle For Seattle' Little Roy takes a stab at the success formula of Easy Star All-Stars, creating a reggae version of a well-known album from pop and rock history. The "Seattle" in the title is already a serious giveaway, because we're talking about the band that made grunge a worldwide phenomenon: Nirvana! Inspiration for the project was not Little Roy, but Mike Pelanconi aka Prince Fatty. The songs on 'Battle For Seattle' were taken from different Nirvana albums ('Nevermind', 'Bleach' and 'In Utero') and the cover photo is a reinterpretation of their 'Bleach' album. What seems a fun and original idea on paper can in reality still go horribly wrong, so the key question is definitely: Nirvana on reggae, will that work? The answer is a resounding: "Hell yes!" Little Roy turns out to be a more than excellent choice to give Cobain's songs a roots reggae vibe; Nirvana fans will definitely enjoy this album and for those who never bothered with grunge it's still a highly enjoyable roots album. Moreover, it is also fun to be able to listen to Cobain's lyrics in a more intelligible setting than Nirvana's music (no offence intended). The only downside may be that Nirvana's biggest hit, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' wasn't included in the track list.
