Los Callejeros (loosely translated "the street musicians") is the story of three musical rebels with a cause: Frank Mercado Avalos (cajon, vallenato accordion and vocals), Ben De Wandel (guitar, charango, vocals) and Peter Morris (guitar, Cuban tres and vocals). Their first project, the music documentary 'Cara O Moneda' (a musical travel report in which encounters with local musicians are interspersed with discussions about universal themes like love and happiness) was immediately selected for the 2006 edition of Docville, the Leuven documentary film festival. The title of their debut album, 'El Camino Es El Destino' (rather than reaching ones destination, the most important part of travelling is being on the road), perfectly summarizes the philosophy of Los Callejeros: sharing their music while travelling. Musically they bring the kind of musica mestiza Manu Chao is also known for: simple melodies with mostly Spanish lyrics, spiced up with influences that range from Peru or Bolivia ('Ser De Luzita') over Colombia ('El Mundo') to Cuba ('Cara O Moneda'). Visually, this album is a gem; the artwork of Hans Bloemmen gives the CD-case the allure of a soundtrack from a Tim Burton movie. It remains strange that some music projects in this country don't nearly get the attention they deserve...
