One of the many names on 'Oi! A Nova Musica Brasileira!', the excellent compilation on the Brazilian Mais Um Discos label was that of Lucas Santtana. Hailing from Bahia, Santtana bases his music on the simple combination of his voice with the cavaquinho, the Brazilian answer to the ukulele, sometimes larded with break-beats and distortion effects. In line with album title 'Sem Nostalgia' ("without nostalgia"), Santtana uses influences from artists like Gilberto Gil, Dorival Caymmi or Caetano Veloso to lift Brazilian music to the 21st century. Fascinating album that should also be able to please music lovers who are not into world music.
