The cover - a Hungarian betyár or outlaw on a Harley Davidson - of Magyarvista Social Club's album debut is just about the coolest we saw this year, but the music on 'Utazólevél' ("travel documents") is a little less exciting. The idea behind this project is not bad: catapulting Hungarian folklore into the twenty-first century by infusing it with a jazz and rock sauce. In addition to their own compositions classics by J.J. Cale ('Cocaine'), Bob Marley ('I Shot The Sheriff') and The Police ('Roxanne') also get an Hungarian makeover. All the songs tell the stories of legendary betyárs like Sándor Rózsa and Jóska Sobri. We can imagine this makes for a fun and original album if you're Hungarian, but for all others what remains is a very nice cover that promises more than the album has to offer.
