Envy and jealousy are rarely good counselors and drove a wedge between the different members of Staff Benda Bilili. A few of the musicians (Coco Yakala Ngambali and Théo Ntsituvuidi) quickly pulled themselves together and supplemented with some fresh faces they formed Mbongwana Star (mbongwana is Lingala for "change") and immediately signed an album deal with the renowned World Circuit Records label. Does that mean Mbongwana Star sounds like a carbon copy of Staff Benda Bilili (still touring in a different line-up) then? Not really, the cynical nod to their ex-band mates 'C'est Quoi 1 Million?' comes close, but the rest of Mbongwana's repertoire is more in line with the psychedelic tribal trance of Congolese bands like Kasai Allstars and Konono N°1 (the latter band actually makes an appearance in 'Mulakayi', the first single from 'From Kinshasa'). This debut album was produced by Doctor L (Liam Farrell), in the past already responsible for Tony Allen's 'Black Voices' album and personal releases like 'The Great Depression', who describes Mbongwana Star's sound as: "Making magic out of garbage...".
