Fans of Protoje will undoubtedly already be familiar with Mortimer (born Mortimer McPherson), as the Kingston-based singer who grew up in rural Whitehall, Saint Elizabeth, lent his voice to both 'Protection' from 'Ancient Future' and 'Truths & Rights' from successor 'A Matter Of Time'. Mortimer's debut effort, 2014s 'Message Music', produced by Jay Crazie Records and distributed by VPal, remained somewhat under the radar, but for 'Fight The Fight' he teamed up with Protoje producer Phillip 'Winta' James and the result is definitely worth hearing. On the 6 track EP Mortimer alternates between conscious tracks like opener 'Careful', in which he warns for wolves in sheep’s clothing pretending to be your friends ("I tell you just be careful of the ones, the ones you call your friends, cause nuff a dem a snake, dem filled with jealousy, oh, and they will let you down!"), 'Misery', or the Marley-esque 'Fight The Fight', and love tunes like 'Lightning', 'Style & Grace' and closing track 'No Lies' (that last song more r&b than reggae and over the same riddim as Protoje's 'Bout Noon'). Overstand Entertainment is quickly becoming a quality label for rock solid Jamaican productions and with Mortimer's 'Fight The Fight' they add another excellent release to their catalogue.
