'Rumberos A Montón' may sound like it was recorded somewhere between San Juan, Havana and New York, but in fact, percussionist Nils Fischer (also still active with CaboCubaJazz, Skins & Keys, Nueva Manteca and a bunch of other bands) actually hails from the German city of Bremen. However, if we add that Fischer was schooled in Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Amsterdam and was taught by greats like Giovanni Hidalgo, Jerry Gonzalez, Orestes Vilato, Roberto Vizcaino, Panga and Anthony Carillo, you'll realise we're dealing with a master musician here. That being said, Nils started out playing the piano, but when one day his sister returned home with a record by Paquito D'Rivera with Daniel Ponce on percussion, the rhythms he heard stole his heart. In 2007 there was already '¡Gracias Joe Cuba!', dedicated to Gilberto Calderon aka Joe Cuba, widely regarded as the father of boogaloo, now followed by 'Rumberos A Montón', an album full of son, timba and salsa dura, for which Fischer collaborated with no less than 34 musicians (Changuito, Lucrecia, Calixto Oviedo, Alexander Abreu, Carlos del Puerto, Julito Padron...) recording in Belgium, Cuba, Finland, The Netherlands, Spain and the US. The Spanish sung cover of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' (featuring Shirma Rouse on vocals) yours truly could have done without, but even that song invites the listener to hit the dance floor.
