Yours truly, got to know Promise No Promises back in 2013 thanks to 'Surely', a version over the Puff Puff riddim, a production by New Sound Records and Belgian producer Marc Leys (MacLes Music Factory Productions), and now comes the Antigua based Guyanese (real name Kobla Mentor) finally also presents his first solo effort! The album was given the somewhat ominous sounding title 'No Can Do', but that's not without reason. The Ziggi Blacks produced album should normally already have been released about a year ago, but the sudden tragic demise of Blacks (the producer was shot) in December of last year, bumped the release to this year. 'Surely' also features in the track list of 'No Can Do', and Marc Leys was responsible for the mastering and mix of the album. Other highlights include the energetic up-tempo 'See Them', the Walshy Fire produced 'We Draw Out', repatriation tune 'Africa Love', 'Rasta Say No Can Do', in which Promise excels vocally, the cheerful closing track 'We're Gonna Make It', for which Promise No Promises switches to ska, the excellent ganja tune 'A Just Herb Officer', and finally, for those who love lovers tune, 'Faith' (which we preferred over 'If I', a duet with a certain Snoodle Bug). With 'No Can Do', Promise No Promises trods an almost faultless path, resulting in a solid debut that held our interest from start to finish.
