Now that most Cuban soneros have disappeared from the scene, the attention of the music industry is shifting to other Spanish-speaking islands in the Caribbean area. A couple of years ago iASO Records (re-)discovered Dominican legend José Manuel Cobles aka Puerto Plata. The history of son on the Dominican Republic was a turbulent one and the genre is only now being rediscovered again. For 'Casita De Campo' (roughly translated "the cottage in the fields") octogenarian Plata dove into his past to record a number of songs, which he remembered from his childhood. Although most of these songs are part of the collective memory in the Dominican Republic, everyone has long forgotten who originally wrote them. Classic son-album by one of the last original Dominican soneros.
