If you prefer your (world) music slightly more intimate, more experimental and less mainstream, then please give Qotob Trio's 'Entity' a try. Qotob, was founded in Damascus by Syrian cellist Bassel Abou Fakher as a platform for musicians in world music, but changed to a trio after Bassel fled is native Syria and ended up in Belgium, consisting apart from himself, of pianist Jean-Baptiste Delneuville and accordionist Piet Maris. The trio considers 'Entity' as a crossroads (as is literally the case for Brussels) of their musical backgrounds, with a strong focus on breaching the classic East versus West patterns. 'Entity' is somewhat reminiscent of the compositions by Tunisian oud-player Anouar Brahem and the Arabian jazz of Rabih Abou-Khalil, Dhafer Youssef or Bachar Mar Khalifé. Musical poetry between melancholy and joy.
