One of the world music trends for 2009 is definitely the popularization of Afro-Peruvian music. Just a few weeks ago we tested the excellent Afrolima, and with Radiokijada we can already introduce the next Afro-Peruvian project. Radiokijada is a collaborative effort of Peruvian percussionist and composer Rodolfo Muñoz and Christoph H. Müller (known from his work with neo-tango group Gotan Project). For most of you this will be also the first encounter with the quijada, a little known Afro-Peruvian percussion instrument made from the lower jawbone of a mule. This instrument was created almost out of necessity after the slave owners banned the use of drums (because they were too often used to transmit secret messages). The music of Radiokajida is built both on modern and traditional elements and that's exactly the fusion Muñoz & Müller are going for: Afro-Peruvian music for the 21th century!
