'Ilakake', Malagasy accordion-master Régis Gizavo's third solo album, may be an audiovisual postcard of Madagascar, with 'Brazil' it oddly enough kicks off on the other side of the ocean, as the song is an ode to the largest nation on the South-American subcontinent. 'Toliara' is a tribute to the city of the same name in the southwest of Madagascar, also Gizavo's place of birth. Title track 'Ilakake' sounds uplifting, but is actually an indictment of the dominating sapphire industry in Madagascar. 'Nahazo', a story about a boy who leaves his native village only to return after long time, sounds autobiographical and the same goes for 'Relaza', in which Gizavo tells of a boy stemming from a large family. Even though Régis is mainly known as an accordionist, on 'Ilakake' he proves also being far from a bad vocalist. Nice introduction for those who still have to discover Malagasy music.
