Ruff Selectors is a project around American-Nigerian Michael Oyo aka Teacher Mike, who for 'Roots In My Soul' collaborated with Ivorian singer and producer Jungle King. Asked about the album, Mike summarized it as follows: "The goal is to promote positivity in everyone's life, and, although it's a tough task, this must start with ourselves. On this album, which speaks about real-life situations, human awareness, and my personal experiences, all the tracks are connected by a common thread.". The track list of 'Roots In My Soul' is a mix of reggae and dancehall (ganja tune 'Ganja Theft', 'DJ'), whith Teacher Mike and Jungle King alternating between English and French. Mike's raspy voice takes somewhat getting used to, but the combination with Jungle King makes for a good balance. Our attention was especially drawn by closing track 'Plant It', a ganja tune and a reggae version of The Fugees' 'Fu-Gee-La', in which Italian-Algerian singer Jamila K also makes an appearance, 'Ilegit Refugee', a statement about the European Government's anti-migration policy reminding us of Peter Tosh's 'Equal Rights', and 'Colours', a song over a revamp of the riddim of Carl Dawkins' rocksteady classic 'Satisfaction' (more recently also recycled by Richie Spice for 'Groovin' My Girl').
