The Spanish Kasba Music label is best known as a promoter of fresh talent from the Iberian Peninsula, but where Rumbacali is concerned things are somewhat different. For this project Sabor De Gracia front man Antoni 'Sicus' Carbonell invited three veterans from rumba gitana (think Gipsy Kings but a tad less commercial) and flamenco: Josep 'Chacho' Maria Valenti was the first major pianist of rumba catalana, flamenco singer Maruja Garrido was Salvador Dali's muse and the wife of flamenco dancer and choreographer Antonio Gades, and Lita 'La Maña' Claver is an actress and flamenco singer who made a name for herself in variety theatre. Normally Antoni 'Tio Toni' Valenti Carbonell should also have been part of Rumbacali, but fate decided otherwise; his 'Mi Bonbón' was still added to the track list and 'El Duende, La Luz Y La Noche' ("the passionate, the light and the night") was dedicated to Tio Toni. Add to this guest performances by Marinah, La Pegatina front man Adria Salas and Las Migas and you know things can hardly go wrong with Rumbacali. The Spanish answer to Buena Vista Social Club!
